June 21 Summer Solstice in Berlin

Every year on the summer solstice Berlin hosts a music festival called "Berlin Fête de la Musique." With over 300 sites throughout the city it is the largest one day music festival in Europe.  With so many choices, it takes some research to decide where to go.  Fortunately, my friend Frank did that research and we went to a bar on the east side where the musicians played on the sidewalk and the crowds filled the cobblestone street.  
For dinner we took a short walk to a former brewery complex. It has now been turned into an arts & entertainment complex with rock concerts, shows & open-air events and restaurants.

Hi All,   Greetings from Berlin, where I landed yesterday to start my annual European summer vacation. Not letting any grass grow under my feet, I took a train and hour south to Wittenberg, where I met up with Gerald and Ines, new friends from the Antarctic cruise, who live near Leipzig.  We wandered around the historic center and enjoyed a late lunch.  They brought their charming grandson Ludwig along. Wittenberg is a charming mideval town along the Elbe river. It is noted primarily for its connection to Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, though it was founded as the former residence of the Electorate of Saxony.  On the city’s market square stands the 13th-century City Church where Luther preached.  On the exterior of this church is an offensive anti-Jewish sculpture depicting Jews with a pig.  Such representations,  widespread in the Middle Ages, were intended to humiliate and marginalize Jews.  Today the continued ex...

June 22 Brussels

I think the last time I spent any time in Brussels was in 1982 when I traveled with my parents, so coming back 43 years later has been akin to visiting a city I'd never seen before. We arrived mid afternoon in time for a late lunch of mussels, of course, as it's the national dish.  This is the area where we ate. Our early evening walking tour of the old city focused on locations where tortorous public punishments were common until the late 19th Century.  We started in the Grand Square, a large public square with a collection of seven magnificent 16th to 17th century buildings that were once the headquarters of craft guilds.
